Site Map

At the moment, this site is pretty simply laid out ... nearly every page can be reached from the menu (at left). This page provides a brief synopsis of each page, as well as links to additional pages that aren't accessible by the menu.

Home: Provides a list and brief overview of current projects, upcoming and recent events, and other newsworthy announcements. Intended as a "teaser" page, with links to more content on other pages.

Mission Statement: Who we are and what we're doing, in the most general terms.

Site Map: See above.

Site Updates: Anything the Webmonkey does to the site gets logged here. Usually. Includes front- and back-end updates.

Site Updates 2007: List of site updates from 2007.

Site Updates 2006: List of site updates from 2006.

Events & Meetings: Lists upcoming events & meetings, providing time, place, agenda and any other pertinent information. Also linked from the Calendar (at right).

Interpretive Program: Schedule & descriptions of informal (and formal) educational opportunities and special events conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. For students, teachers, residents and visitors.

Minutes & Reports: Details of what happened during past events & meetings during the current year. Also linked from the Calendar, at right.

Minutes & Reports 2006: Details of what happened during 2006 events & meetings.

Current Projects: Ongoing and future projects and proposals for projects are listed and summed up here. Links to more information are at the end of each project description.

Trail Maintenance: Information about the volunteer trail maintenance projects scheduled to take place on and around the mountain & reservation are here, including descriptions of the work, dates, times, and how to get involved.

Visitor's Center Vestibule: Proposal and plan to build a vestibule on the front of the John Hitchcock Visitor's Center.

Incubator of Ideas: By expanding our study of salamander populations, involving the public in field and laboratory studies, and investigating long-term environmental trends on the mountain, we seek to establish this valuable state resource as a site for increasing future endeavors and UML involvement.

Research: This page briefly describes the various research projects currently being conducted on the mountain and in the reservation. Each research project page (or section) is linked at the end of its overview.

Biological Monitoring: Our goal is to quantify variations in natural patterns when habitats are put in some sort of environmental stress like a hot, dry summer. How hot and dry will it have to get to substantially change the invertebrate community the following year?

Old-Growth Forest: Studies of Wachusett Mountain's old-growth forest (one of the largest in Southern New England) are collected in this section, as well as links to more information.

Spotted Salamanders: Wachusett Mountain's summit pond is home to exceptionally large Spotted Salamanders, and studies are being conducted to find out why they're so much bigger there than anywhere else in the state.

Spring Peepers: Details of how to participate in a state-wide study aimed at building a database of Spring Peeper calling activity.

Maps & Directions: Driving directions to the John Hitchcock Visitor's Center, links to pre-zeroed Google & MapQuest maps, and several printable trail maps.

Photo Gallery: Photos of and around the mountain, as well as pictures taken at events & meetings and projects, all categorized.

Virginia Metevia: An avid photographer and hiker, Ms. Metevia's beautiful photos are taken from across the reservation. Her current gallery includes scans of vintage photos of and from the summit.

Virginia Metevia (Gallery 1): Ms. Metevia's first submission of photos.

Friends of Friends: Links to State, Local & Municipal Websites, Departments at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, more "Friends of" organizations and other interesting and related sites.

Keep Your Fish to Yourself: Goldfish (and other "pet" fish) introduced to the summit pond are a big problem for the native animals, hampering their ability to thrive, or even survive there as a species. Keep Your Fish to Yourself is an effort to police the summit pond for anyone exacerbating the problem by dumping fish.

Contact Us: List of e-mail addresses (general, photo submission, and webmonkey) and the postal mailing address (P.O. box).
